Downsizing or Rightsizing: Either way it’s not just for Empty Nesters!

Downsizing does not have to mean a Tiny House

Turn on any House or DIY channel and there is guaranteed to be a show about “tiny house” living.  Most tiny houses are 500 square feet or less.

My first apartment was 500 square feet and it was spacious to me…because I lived alone.  Now with a family of 4-6 (depending on the day of the week) and pets, I could never imagine living in that small of a space.  I know people do and I’m impressed.

When we moved, we looked at larger houses.  All I kept thinking was, “who wants to clean and maintain all that?” Besides maintenance, there are many other reasons to downsize.

Financial Benefits

For many years, people bought houses thinking “bigger is better”.  It was a sign of success to have a “McMansion”  Now, there seems to be a movement against that.   There are many financial benefits to downsizing:

  • Less maintenance/expenses
  • Lower mortgage payments
  • Lower tax bills and lower utility bills
  • Potential to save more money for the future and more disposable income to spend on fun

Emotional Benefits

Many people downsize to be closer to their family.  When every dollar counts towards maintaining a household, everyone has to work harder and that doesn’t leave much time for family.  By moving to a home with less financial burden, you have more time for the things you love.  There is also more togetherness in smaller spaces. It  makes you appreciate what you have. I know I’d rather be outside playing with my children then inside cleaning multiple bathrooms in my house

Think “Rightsizing”

The real idea isn’t about living with less…. it’s living with what you really need.  Finding a house that is “rightsized” can bring you financial and emotional security.  It’s using what you really need instead of what you think you need. It is also another way to make a positive impact on the environment with less consumption overall.

The idea of eliminating some of your possessions may seem hard at first, but think of it in the same way as when you sell any house… you begin with the 3 D’s.  Declutter and donate are obvious.  Instead of Depersonalize, think of it as letting go of some personal items to make room for the new treasures you might find in the future.
